Carpenter found guilty

MARQUETTE, MI--   An Ishpeming man has been found guilty of killing his housemate.  

After eight hours of deliberation a jury Wednesday found Jack Carpenter, 52, guilty of voluntary manslaughter in the shooting death of David Meyer, 29.  Carpenter was also found guilty on felony possession of a firearm. 

The incident happened in June of last year.   

Carpenter was being tried on an open murder charge, punishable by up to life in prison.  Voluntary manslaughter carries a penalty of up to 15 years in prison, while felony firearms is punishable by up to two years. 

Sentencing is set for November 1 in Marquette County Circuit Court. 

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
