Murder suspect convicted of killing fellow inmate at Ojibway Correctional Facility

BESSEMER, MI--   An inmate at the Ojibway Correctional Facility in Marenisco has been found guilty of killing another inmate last year.

Michael Smith, 33, was charged with second-degree murder and voluntary manslaughter—both as an habitual offender-fourth offense—in the January 2013 beating death of Randolph Connor, 26.  After an eight-day trial in Gogebic County Circuit Court Smith was convicted on the manslaughter charge.  He faces up to life in prison.

Smith’s codefendant—Delorean Henderson, 26—pleaded guilty this past January.  Officials have not released what the charge was.

Authorities say Connor was repeatedly punched and kicked in the prison’s TV room.  He was taken to Marquette General Hospital but died of severe head trauma.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
