Hearing set for accused Atlantic Mine hit-and-run driver

HOUGHTON, MI--   A probable cause hearing is set for an Atlantic Mine man accused in a hit-and-run accident in Houghton County. 

Benjamin Riutta, 31, is charged with failure to stop at the scene of an accident, resulting in serious impairment or death.

On March 10 a 36-year-old Atlantic Mine woman was walking along Obenhoff Road in Adams Township when she was struck by a vehicle that crossed the centerline.  The driver fled the scene.

Riutta faces up to five years in prison and a $5,000 fine. 

His probable cause hearing is set for Wednesday. 

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
