Moilanen pleads to killing Hubbell woman

HOUGHTON, MI--   A Hubbell man arrested in the stabbing death of a 48-year-old woman and the attempted stabbing of her daughter has pleaded no contest in the case.  

Paul Moilanen, 42, is charged with second-degree murder in the death of Marcy Lavigne and attempted murder in an attack on her 14-year-old daughter last September. 

He pleaded no contest to both charges Monday in Houghton County Circuit Court.

Moilanen faces up to life in prison.  Sentencing is set for August 31. 

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
