Man sentenced for strangling victim

MARQUETTE, MI--   A member of the Keweenaw Bay Indian Community has been sentenced for choking a woman in February.  

Jacob Charles Maki, 35, pleaded guilty to assault by strangulation.  He was accused of repeatedly choking the woman on February 28 and March 1. 

Maki was sentenced in federal court Monday to 27 months in prison and three years of supervised release. 

KBIC Tribal Police and the FBI assisted in the case.  

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
