Saario arraigned on homicide charge

CRYSTAL FALLS, MI--   An Alpha man was arraigned on murder charges in Iron County District Court 

Thursday.

Alfred Saario, 65, is accused of shooting and killing his 29-year-old stepdaughter, Jamie Lee James, in an Alpha residence on June 23.  He’s charged with open murder and discharging a firearm in a building, causing death. 

Saario allegedly tried to commit suicide by shooting himself in the face.  He can’t speak because of the injuries he sustained.

Saario remains lodged in the Iron County Jail on a $500,000 bond.

A probable cause hearing is set for July 25, and a preliminary exam is scheduled for August 1.  

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
