Embezzlement suspect faces another charge

MANISTIQUE, MI--   A Seney Township woman accused of embezzlement was in court this week on a different charge.

Shawna Haines, 42, was arrested in June and charged with one count of embezzlement and four counts of uttering and publishing.  She allegedly took around $28,000 in extra paychecks when she worked as the township treasurer.

Haines stood mute Thursday on a charge of knowingly attempting to obtain, obtaining, or possessing a drug by means of prescription for other than a legitimate therapeutic purpose, or as a result of a false, forged, or altered prescription.  It’s a misdemeanor punishable by up to 90 days in jail and a $500 fine.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
