Woman present during hatchet attack pleads to lesser charge

ESCANABA, MI--   An Escanaba woman has agreed to a plea deal in connection with a hatchet attack in the city last April.

Shilo Powers, 20, was arrested along with Timothy Heitz, 19, of Kansas, after he used the rounded end of a hatchet to beat a 31-year-old man.

Powers was originally charged with being an accessory to a felony.  She’s pleaded guilty to lying to a peace officer in exchange for dismissal of the first charge.

Sentencing is set for October 24.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
