Report says Copper Country judge position should be cut

LANSING, MI--   The State Court Administrative Office is recommending the elimination of a judgeship in the Copper Country.

The Keweenaw County probate judge position is part-time, and the only judgeship in Michigan that allows the judge to also practice law.

In its Judicial Resources Recommendations report issued Monday, the SCAO recommended the creation of a probate court district of Houghton and Keweenaw counties and the elimination through attrition of the Keweenaw County judgeship. Such a district could be created if the issue is approved by voters in both counties.

As an alternative the SCAO recommended the reduction through attrition of one district judgeship. The report says Baraga, Houghton, and Keweenaw counties could be served by two probate judges.

Any changes would have to be approved by the Michigan legislature.
