Whitmer makes appointment to Houghton County bench

HOUGHTON, MI--   Governor Gretchen Whitmer has appointed Nicholas Daavettila to the 97th District Court in Houghton County.

Daavettila is a private practice attorney specializing in criminal law, child protective proceedings, family law, and probate estates. He is the director and secretary of Tri-County Public Defenders, a non-profit serving Houghton, Keweenaw and Baraga counties. Daavettila is a member of the Houghton County Revolving Loan Fund Board. He earned his Bachelor of Science in economics from Michigan Technological University and a Juris Doctor degree from Marquette University Law School.

The appointment was made to fill a partial term vacated by Judge Mark Wisti. It expires at noon on January 1, 2021. If Daavettila wishes to seek a full six-year term, he would be required to run for reelection this November.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
