Man charged in Sault Ste. Marie murder case

SAULT STE. MARIE, MI--   A Sault Ste. Marie man has been arraigned on a murder charge in Chippewa County.

On Tuesday night 27-year-old Haley Smith was found dead in a residence on the 800 block of Minneapolis Street in the Soo. City Police say she had a severe laceration on her throat. An injured male subject had fled the scene on foot.

Officers later found Jacob McKerchie, 28, and took him to the hospital. On Wednesday he was released into police custody and lodged at the Chippewa County Jail.

McKerchie was arraigned Thursday on a charge of open murder. He’s being held without bond.

His next court date is August 26.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
