Phillips-Donovan sentenced for adoptive father's death

HARRIS TOWNSHIP, MI— A Menominee County man accused of killing his father in his Harris Township garage was sentenced last week.

Gary Phillips-Donovan, 36, received 22 to 40 years in prison. He pleaded no contest in August to beating his father, Michael Donovan, in the head with a shovel in November of 2019.

Under a plea agreement, the original open murder charge was reduced to second-degree murder.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
