PONTIAC, MI (MPRN)— The teenager accused of shooting 11 people at Oxford High School last November—killing four of them—has pleaded guilty to all 24 charges against him.

That’s despite Ethan Crumbley’s attorneys initially filing a notice they would pursue an insanity defense.

Evidence in the involuntary manslaughter case against Crumbley’s parents shows the then 15-year-old attempted to ask for help with his mental health in the months leading up to the shooting. Crumbley’s attorney, Paulette Michel Lofton, says her team did explore arguing the teen was insane at the time of the shooting.

“Based on the conversations that we’ve had and the review of the discovery… we felt it appropriate to withdraw that and have him plead guilty today.”

Lofton says the next step for Crumbley is what’s known as a “Miller hearing,” where both sides present evidence before sentencing.

Crumbley’s parents are expected to go on trial next year.
