Man sentenced for operating poker game in Marquette

MARQUETTE, MI— A Gwinn man has been sentenced for running an illegal gambling operation in Marquette.

The Michigan Gaming Control Board says on April 1st of 2021, Joshua Thatcher, 42, opened a so-called private poker club called 906 Poker Social at 1200 South Front Street. It closed on July 8th of that year, following a joint investigation by the Michigan Department of Attorney General and the Michigan Gaming Control Board Criminal Investigation section.

Thatcher pleaded guilty on December 2nd to one felony count of gambling operations. As part of his plea agreement, Thatcher agreed to forfeit to the state all items seized from the location. That included six poker tables, $13,000 in cash, and other money held in bank accounts connected to the investigation.

Thatcher was sentenced January 19th to 12 months of probation.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
