Kewadin suing former attorneys for malpractice

SAULT STE. MARIE, MI— The Kewadin Casinos Gaming Authority has filed a malpractice suit against a law firm it hired after two downstate casino projects fell through.

Officials say they have formally moved forward against Patterson, Earnhart, Real Bird & Wilson LLP for its mismanagement of the casino’s legal dispute with former development partners JLLJ Development and Lansing Future Development II.

Kewadin was ordered to pay the developers $88 million dollars after they claimed breach of contract. A settlement slashed that amount to $25 million.

If Kewadin is successful in its malpractice suit, it must pay the developers up to $10 million more from the proceeds. If unsuccessful, Kewadin will pay them another $5 million.
