CSC conviction handed down to former Menominee deputy

MENOMINEE, MI— A former Menominee County Sheriff’s deputy was convicted of second-degree criminal sexual conduct with a weapon on Friday.

Brian Helfert, 60, was accused of assaulting Eric Jenkins when the boy was a 16-year-old Menominee High School Student in 2019.

Two other charges in the case—third-degree criminal sexual conduct and third-degree criminal sexual conduct—student—and one charge in another case—child sexually abusive activity—were dismissed for various legal reasons.

Helfert was taken to jail after the verdict was read. He faces up to 15 years in prison.

Sentencing is set for February 23rd.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
