Helfert facing another sexual assault trial in Menominee

MENOMINEE, MI— A former Menominee County Sheriff’s deputy convicted of 2nd-degree criminal sexual conduct with a weapon in December is requesting another jury trial in a different case.

The attorney for Brian Helfert, 60, made the request at a pretrial conference on Tuesday. Following last year’s guilty verdict, Helfert is now charged with two counts of 1st-degree criminal sexual conduct with a child 13 years old.

He’s accused of sexually assaulting a 6th-grade student from Blesch Intermediate School in 2017. Helfert was a School Resource Officer at the time.

He allegedly told the victim not to say anything about the incident and that no one would believe him if he did. A jury trial in that case is set for July 29th through August 2nd.

Sentencing for the December conviction has been adjourned from February 23rd to March 7th.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
