Federal jury convicts Houghton man of painting swastikas on synagogue

GRAND RAPIDS, MI— A Houghton man has been found guilty in federal court of defacing a Hancock synagogue.

A jury on Thursday convicted Nathan Weeden, 23, of conspiring with others and defacing Temple Jacob with swastikas and symbols associated with The Base, a multi-state, white supremacist group.

In September 2019, Weeden and two others used an encrypted messaging platform to discuss vandalizing property associated with African Americans and Jewish Americans. On September 21st he spray-painted swastikas and symbols associated with The Base on the outside walls of Temple Jacob.

Weeden was convicted of Conspiracy Against Rights and Damage to Religious Property.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
