Former Houghton cop sentenced to jail on drug charge

HOUGHTON, MI— A former Houghton City Police officer has been sentenced to 90 days in jail and 18 months of probation for possession of methamphetamine.

In 2021, allegations of meth possession and use were made against Scott Monette, 55, of Chassell Township. He was a city officer at the time and had also served on the Upper Peninsula Substance Enforcement Team.

The case was investigated by the Michigan State Police. Troopers found meth and smoking pipes at Monette’s residence and confirmed his DNA was present on the pipes.

Monette pleaded guilty to possession of meth on January 3rd of this year.

Monette resigned and agreed not to renew his MCOLES certification—a prerequisite for employment as a police officer in Michigan.

Other conditions of Monette’s probation include drug testing and counseling.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
