Attempt to recall MAPS Board members fails

FM Studio A

MARQUETTE, MI— A judge has rejected a Marquette resident’s attempt to recall two Marquette Area Public Schools Board members.

A “Clarity Review” hearing was held Thursday for proposed language submitted by Marquette Senior High School graduate Margaret Brumm. MAPS Board trustees Jennifer Ray and Jennifer Klipp were targets of the proposed recall.

Brumm said she initiated the recall effort for the following reasons:

  • Violations of MAPS Financial Policies and Procedures, “Section 3000, Operations, Finance, and Property”
  • Failure to manage control over MAPS departments to prevent embezzlement of at least $100,000
  • Failure to keep written records as required concerning donations of rebranded tee-shirts
  • Failure to manage rebranding efforts in a fiscally prudent manner
  • Failure to publicly review Financial Status of MAPS at publicly scheduled School Board meetings

Brumm has publicly opposed the change of the MSHS mascot from Redmen to Sentinels. She has said she wants the school board to negotiate with her directly.

Judge Cheryl Hill said the proposal failed to provide enough facts or clarity. She denied the recall.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
