Woman charged in Marinette car-pedestrian crash pleads guilty

MARINETTE, WI— The driver in a Marinette accident that injured a young pedestrian has pleaded guilty in the case.

Amber Renner, 36, was westbound on Carney Avenue last December when she heard something in the back seat, where her child was. She said she turned to look behind her, and when she turned back around, 17-year-old Bryce Steinfath was in the crosswalk. He was struck and suffered significant injuries.

Renner was initially charged with knowingly operating a motor vehicle while license suspended, causing great bodily harm.

On Friday she pleaded guilty to that charge. In exchange, three misdemeanors—inattentive driving, operating a vehicle without insurance, and operating with a suspended license—were dismissed.

WLUK-TV says the case could be dismissed if Renner completes the terms of her deferred judgment agreement. They include attending mental health assessment and counseling, traffic safety school, criminal thinking education, and parenting classes.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
