Chippewa County woman pleads no contest to murder after man, dogs die in house fire

FOUNTAIN, MI— A Kincheloe woman has pleaded in an arson case in which a Mason County man and two dogs died.

Hope Snyder, 43, was charged with first-degree murder, first-degree arson, and two counts of second-degree killing/torturing an animal. Snyder was accused of killing the victim and his dogs in November of 2021 by setting his Fountain home on fire while he slept.

Text and Facebook messages indicated Snyder and the victim had an argument the night of the incident. Snyder also messaged friends about her plan to steal the victim’s truck and money and burn down his house. After setting the fire, she fled across the state in the victim’s truck and was arrested at Detroit Metro Airport.

Tuesday, Snyder pleaded “no contest” to second-degree murder, along with the other three charges. She faces up to 60 years in prison.

Sentencing is set for August 27.
