UP woman to spend up to 60 years in prison for killing man, dogs by setting his house on fire

MASON COUNTY, MI— A Kincheloe woman has been sentenced in the 2021 murder of a downstate man and his two dogs by arson.

Hope Snyder, 43, was given 35 to 60 years in prison for killing Jeffery Grant by setting his Fountain home on fire. She pleaded no contest earlier this month to second-degree murder, first-degree arson, and two counts of second-degree killing/torturing an animal.

Text and Facebook messages indicate Snyder and Grant had argued the night she set his house on fire. Snyder also messaged friends about her plan to steal Grant’s truck and money and burn down his house.

Snyder fled the scene of the fire in Grant’s truck and was later arrested at Detroit Metro Airport.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
