MUNISING, MI— An Eaton County man who pleaded guilty to stealing money from U.P. campgrounds is jailed in Alger County.

Justyn Spitzley, 36, was arrested for breaking into several payment collection sites in which campers deposit cash – known as pay pipes – last fall. He was arraigned in February on charges of larceny-greater than $1,000 but less than $20,000, 11 counts of breaking and entering a coin-operated device, and operating a vehicle with a suspended or revoked license.

Spitzley pleaded guilty to one felony charge of larceny of more than $1,000 but less than $20,000 and one misdemeanor charge of operating on a suspended license.

He was ordered to pay $8,000 in restitution and sentenced to one year in jail with credit for 81 days served. Spitzley was lodged in the Ionia County Jail on unrelated charges, then transferred in April to the Alger County Jail, where he will serve the remainder of his sentence.

Campgrounds Spitzley stole from include Perch Lake, Lake Superior, Blind Sucker No. 1 and No. 2, and Mouth of the Two Hearted River.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
