Marquette man charged with home invasion, felony firearms in 2024 incident sentenced

MARQUETTE, MI— A Marquette man arrested for breaking into a home and assaulting the resident with a handgun in August 2024 has been sentenced.

River-Jordan Shumate, 26, was charged with 1st-degree home invasion, 3rd-degree home invasion, carrying a weapon with unlawful intent, assault with a dangerous weapon, two counts of felony firearms, and possession of cocaine.

He plead “no contest” in March to assault with a dangerous weapon, possession of a controlled substance, and third-degree home invasion. The other charges were dropped.

Shumate was sentenced last week to 24 months of probation and 163 days’ credit for time served.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
