Appeals court backs Michigan school in banning 'Let's Go Brandon' shirts

SAND LAKE, M (AP)— A federal appeals court has ruled in favor of a Michigan school district in a dispute over free speech and “Let’s Go Brandon” shirts.

The clothing took a jab at then-President Joe Biden in 2022. Tri County Middle School in western Michigan told two brothers to take off the shirts, citing the dress code. Their mother sued, citing the First Amendment. But the appeals court said, “vulgarity trumps politics ... even when vulgarity is cloaked in innuendo.”

In 2021, an obscenity directed at Biden was being chanted at a NASCAR race, though a TV reporter heard it as “Let’s Go, Brandon.” The line became popular among Biden’s critics.
