Boy involved in Marinette drowning death pleads 'not guilty'

MARINETTE, WI— A teen boy has pleaded “not guilty” in Marinette County Circuit Court in the drowning death of 13-year-old Jakob Bowerman in August.

Peyton Carnot, 16, was arraigned on a charge of second-degree reckless homicide, as party to a crime on Wednesday. He claims it was 21-year-old Tylor Birch’s idea to throw Jakob into the Menominee River on August 20, knowing Jakob couldn’t swim. Carnot is being charged as an adult.

A psychiatric exam found Birch—who is charged with second-degree reckless homicide—is not competent to stand trial. It found he could regain competency through treatment, which will take place in jail.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
