Man sentenced in Chippewa County for 8th drunk driving conviction

SAULT STE. MARIE, MI— A Grand Rapids man has been sentenced to 46 months to 20 years in prison for his third felony drunk driving conviction.

Chippewa County Prosecuting Attorney Robert Stratton says Ryan Foote, 53, was sentenced Tuesday for operating while intoxicated, third offense, with a habitual fourth offense notice. A jury in October also found him guilty of driving while license suspended and possession of an open container of alcohol in a motor vehicle.

Last February, Michigan State Police found a vehicle in a ditch on M-28 in Hulbert. Blood was present and footprints led away from the vehicle. Troopers found Foote lying injured in a snowbank about a quarter mile away.

Records showed Foote’s mother, with whom he lives in the Grand Rapids area, owned the car. Blood tests indicated Foote’s blood alcohol content was 0.175—more than twice the legal limit.

Tuesday’s conviction represented Foote’s eighth alcohol-related driving conviction.
