Man who extorted money from Chippewa County woman sentenced for impersonating peace officer

SAULT STE. MARIE, MI— A Sault Ste. Marie man has been sentenced for impersonating a police officer and stealing money from a senior citizen.

Kevin Farnquist, 48, was out on parole from prison last November when he contacted an elderly person by text. He claimed to be Chippewa County Undersheriff Ryan Hering, then demanded a credit card number from the victim. Farnquist told her he would arrest her son, put him in jail, and impound his car for defective equipment if she didn’t.

The victim supplied her credit card information, but notified the Sheriff’s Department about the text messages two days later. An investigation indicated Farnquist had sent the messages and tried to delete them from his phone.

He was found guilty in December of impersonating a police officer to commit a crime. Farnquist was sentenced Tuesday to 30 months to 15 years in prison. He was also sentenced as a habitual 4th offender.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
