ESCANABA, MI— Trial is taking place over the next couple of weeks for an Escanaba man charged in the death of a pregnant woman in 2023.

Jury selection began Monday and opening statements were heard Tuesday in the trial of Tavaris Jackson, 35. He’s accused of shooting and killing his ex-girlfriend, Harley Corwin, at O.B. Fuller Park in Ford River Township. The 22-year-old was seven months pregnant at the time.

Jackson is charged with open murder, assault of a pregnant individual intentionally causing miscarriage/stillbirth, and felony firearms.

The case is being tried by the Michigan Attorney General’s Office. Delta County Prosecutor Lauren Wickman found shoes critical to the case during the execution of a search warrant. Jackson’s defense said that blurred the line between investigator and advocate, and that makes Wickman a witness.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
