Former Houghton attorney pleads to killing man in 2023

HOUGHTON, MI— A former attorney accused of killing another man in a Houghton bar has pleaded “no contest” in the case.

Evan Dixon, 62, apparently got into an argument with Theron Duncan while they were drinking in the Douglass House Saloon in November 2023. Duncan went to the bathroom and Dixon followed. After a gunshot was heard, Dixon came out of the bathroom and allegedly admitted to killing Duncan, who suffered a gunshot wound to the head.

Dixon was originally charged with first-degree murder and felony firearms. He entered a “no contest” plea Monday to second-degree murder.

Sentencing is set for August 31.

The case is being heard by Marquette County Judge Matt Wiese. Houghton County judges recused themselves because of their prior work with Dixon.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
