Jury finds Alger County suspect guilty of absconding while on bond for drug charges

MUNISING, MI— An Alger County man was found guilty of absconding on a bond following a one-day trial in Munising last week.

The Alger County Prosecutor’s Office says on Wednesday, a jury convicted Craig Smith, 48, of skipping a mandatory urine screen in December 2024 and failing to appear before the 11th Circuit Court. He was on bond from a case involving the possession of meth and cocaine.

In January of 2025, Smith was found fleeing through the woods near a home in Limestone and was tracked 1.5 miles by a Sheriff’s Office K-9 and deputies.

He also faces charges of possession of a firearm by a felon in Marquette and Alger counties.

Smith has requested a directed verdict, which is given by a judge instead of the jury.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
