Brian Helfert denied lighter sentence for CSC conviction involving high school student

MENOMINEE, MI— The Michigan Court of Appeals has refused to grant a lighter sentence for a former Menominee school resource officer imprisoned for criminal sexual conduct.

In March of 2024, Brian Helfert was sentenced to 9 to 15 years for second-degree CSC with a weapon. He was accused of assaulting a 16-year-old when the boy was a student at Menominee High School.

Helfert appealed the severity of the sentence. In a decision released last week, the court found that “the departure sentence is proportional to the offense and the offender.” It said Helfert used his authority as an officer with a gun to groom and abuse victims while on school property, all under the guise of helping, mentoring, and tutoring the student.
