Codefendant in explosives case pleads

MARQUETTE, MI (AP)--   Federal prosecutors in Marquette have notched a guilty plea from one of two people charged in a case involving more than 4,000 pounds of explosive materials.

Ken Kassab of Brimley pleaded guilty Tuesday in Marquette Federal Court to unlawfully transporting a mix of ammonium nitrate and fuel oil in 2010.

Kassab worked for co-defendant John Lechner, a farmer and builder from Sault Ste. Marie who's accused of buying and hiding the explosives.  Lechner was arrested last year after an informant said he wanted help to move a large quantity.  He's not accused of plotting to detonate the mixture.

Lechner goes to trial on June 18.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
