Drugs challenging police in the U.P.

ESCANABA, MI--   Illegal use of prescription drugs is a problem in parts of the Upper Peninsula.

The analysis comes from Ron Koski with the Upper Peninsula Substance Enforcement Team, or UPSET.

The Escanaba Daily Press reports he spoke to community leaders last week in Escanaba.  Koski says drug abusers are buying prescriptions on the street, breaking into homes and "doctor shopping" for multiple prescriptions.

He says methamphetamine has also been a challenge for police, especially in Delta, Marquette, Baraga and Gogebic counties. Twenty-one 21 meth labs have been discovered this year in a 12-county area covered by UPSET.

Koski notes marijuana is an issue, too, because police don't know if someone is approved to grow it for medical purposes until they get a search warrant.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
