IRS phone scam hits Western U.P.

WAKEFIELD, MI--   State Police from the Wakefield Post want to make the public aware of a phone scam in the area.

Troopers say callers are identifying themselves as IRS agents and demanding payment of back taxes.  The scammers are very pushy, even threatening arrest if the victims don’t comply.  Officials say the callers have Middle-Eastern accents and speak poor English.

Troopers are reminding residents that neither the IRS nor any reputable company conducts business in that way, and personal information like bank account and social security numbers should never be given out over the phone.

Anyone who receives such a call should contact police.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
