Volp death now considered a homicide

MARINETTE, WI--   Authorities believe they may have solved the 2008 death of an Iron Mountain man.

Eric Volp, 28, went missing in October of 2008.  His body was found in a Marinette County stream the following July.  Officials determined drowning was not the cause of death.

Erik M. Smith, 33, was seen leaving an Iron Mountain bar with Volp just before Volp went missing.  A Marinette County criminal complaint charges Smith with first-degree reckless homicide, homicide by negligent operation of a motor vehicle, hiding a corpse, and hit and run, resulting in death.

Police believe Smith gave Volp a ride in his vehicle and an argument ensued.  Volp apparently got out of the car and was run over by Smith, who put Volp’s body in the trunk of his car and later dumped it in the stream.

Smith is serving time in a Colorado prison for child pornography charges, but is set to appear in Marinette County Circuit Court March 16.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
