IRS phone scam hitting U.P.

MARQUETTE, MI--   Police agencies across the U.P. are warning the public about a pervasive phone scam.

The Delta County Sheriff’s Office and State Police from the Gladstone and Negaunee Posts say residents are reporting a high number of phone calls that appear to be from the IRS.  The scammer tells the victim that they owe thousands of dollars in delinquent taxes and will be arrested if they don’t pay immediately.

Officials remind residents not to give out any personal information over the phone, as the real IRS already has it.  Hang up on the caller and do not call back any numbers left on voice mail.

Residents can report the incident to the Treasury Inspector General of Tax Administration at 800-366-4484.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
