UPDATE, 2/4/16:  The suspect is identified as Mason Bajanen, 40, of Escanaba.

ESCANABA, MI--    An Escanaba man is lodged in the Delta County Jail on two felony charges connected to a domestic situation.

Public Safety officers were called Tuesday around 6 p.m. to the 1100 block of Sheridan Road and found the house on fire.  They didn’t know if the suspect, who allegedly discharged a firearm inside the home, was inside the structure or not.  The fire was eventually extinguished, but officers didn’t find the suspect.

Further investigation revealed the 40-year-old man was at a camp in a remote portion of Cornell Township.  A perimeter was established outside the camp and the Michigan State Police Emergency Services Team was called in to assist.  After several hours the suspect exited the camp and gave himself up.

The Escanaba man is charged with discharging a firearm in or at a building and assault with a dangerous weapon.  His name has not been released, pending arraignment.

Escanaba Public Safety officers say the investigation continues on all fronts, including the cause of the fire.

They were assisted at the scene by the Ford River Volunteer Fire Department, Rampart EMS, the Delta County Sheriff’s Department, Michigan State Police, DTE Energy, and City Electric.
