Man arrested for stabbing deputy in Breitung Township incident

BREITUNG TOWNSHIP, MI--   A 23-year-old man faces several charges, after he allegedly stabbed a Dickinson County Sheriff’s deputy in the stomach Sunday night.

The Sheriff’s Office and county Prosecutor’s Office issued a joint press release that says the incident happened around 11 p.m. at a residence in Breitung Township.

Deputies responded to a domestic violence complaint and found Matthew Johnson had armed himself with a large, fixed-blade knife. When officers tried to disarm him, Johnson stabbed one of the deputies in the midsection.

The officer was wearing a protective Kevlar vest and was spared from life-threatening injuries.  He was later evaluated by Beacon Ambulance personnel.

Johnson is charged with assault with intent to murder, four counts of resisting/obstructing an officer, two counts of domestic violence, and possession of marijuana.

A probable cause conference is set for February 9 and a preliminary exam February 15.  He remains lodged in the Dickinson County Jail on a $750,000 bond.
