LANSING, MI-- The Michigan Treasury Department says phone scams have become a serious threat during tax season.
The Department says it’s seeing a surge in callers claiming to be tax officials making unsolicited calls and demanding payment through a wire transfer, prepaid debit card, or gift card. Scammers may also leave urgent callback requests through robocalls or phishing e-mails.
Treasury officials say the department will never initiate a phone call to ask for personal information; call to demand immediate payment using a specific payment method; threaten to immediately have the taxpayer arrested for non-payment; ask for credit or debit card numbers over the phone; or demand that taxes be paid without giving the taxpayer a chance to question or appeal the amount owed.
