MARQUETTE, MI-- Marquette County Central Dispatch says it’s received a report of a caller ID spoofing incident in Michigan using 911 as the callback number.
Officials say the scammer called a citizen and said a family member was in an accident. The scammer then began asking for personal information. The citizen called her family member, who was fine.
Central Dispatch says if the 911 center calls you, it will be on a 10-digit line, not a 911 line; the only time the 911 digits will show up as incoming communication will be via text; if you receive a call from someone who says they’re from 911 or another public safety department, ask them for a number where you can call them back; and never give out any personal or financial information over the phone.
