Gogebic County deputy arraigned for misconduct, assault

WAKEFIELD, MI--   A deputy in the western U.P. has been charged with assaulting a jail inmate.

Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel’s office says Scott Voit of the Gogebic County Sheriff’s Office was arraigned Monday for misconduct in office by a public official and assault and battery.

Michigan State Police investigated the incident, which happened in February of 2020. Voit ordered an inmate to kneel so Voit could remove his handcuffs. Before the inmate could fully kneel down, Voit threw him to the ground to remove them.

The incident was caught on video. Evidence shows the inmate was not resisting the handcuff removal. The inmate suffered abrasions to his wrists, a contusion on his back and a fractured rib.

Voit was released on a $5,000 personal recognizance bond following his arraignment in 98th District Court.

No further court dates have yet been set.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
