Students return to Gwinn schools following alleged threat

Nicole Walton

GWINN, MI— Classes resumed at Gwinn Area Community Schools Wednesday, after a threat canceled them Tuesday.

Superintendent Brandon Bruce says Monday afternoon, the middle and high school administration was made aware of a photo on social media. It depicted a student referencing a “school shooting” outfit.

Officials immediately contacted law enforcement. They collaboratively worked to determine the origin and intent of the photo. By early Monday evening, information had been narrowed down but officials believed it would be safest to cancel classes Tuesday and let Forsyth Township Police complete their investigation.

Early Tuesday afternoon, police announced they had determined the source and origin of the photo. School administration is working with the police department and the family through the issue.

Bruce says this kind of situation is frustrating for everyone involved and it creates a tremendous disruption for students. He appreciates everyone’s patience and understanding.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
