SAULT STE. MARIE, MI— A downstate man died from meth ingestion after police arrested him and another man on narcotics charges in Chippewa County.

During a recent investigation, TRIDENT detectives conducted a controlled buy of a quarter-pound of meth. They bought it from Bay City native Nathan Chambers, who allegedly had traveled to Chippewa County to traffic narcotics.

Following the buy, a traffic stop was conducted on his vehicle, which didn’t pull over immediately. Ultimately, Chambers and a 22-year-old Sterling, Michigan man were arrested and lodged in the Chippewa County Correctional Facility.

Unbeknownst to police, both men had each swallowed a bag of narcotics before the car pulled over. When they got to jail, the Sterling man had a medical emergency. Lifesaving measures were started and EMS called, but the man died of acute meth toxicity.

Chambers was brought to the hospital and later released back into police custody. He’s charged with delivery of meth, conspiracy to deliver meth, and delivery of meth, causing death. His bond was set at $500,000 with tether.
