Beware of scammers asking to see utility bills

MARQUETTE, MI— U.P. utilities are warning residents about scammers trying to get personal information from customers.

Both Upper Peninsula Power Company and SEMCO Energy say they’ve received reports of people being approached by individuals claiming to be from the utilities. The individuals asked to see a recent energy bill.

Officials say scammers are expanding their tactics to face-to-face encounters in an attempt to get Personally Identifiable Information and defraud customers.

UPPCO says it will never approach a customer at their home or business to see a bill or require a prepaid debit card, gift card, or other form of payment. SEMCO says customers are never obligated to show personal information—such as a driver’s license or bank account number—to anyone who comes knocking at their door.

Anyone who feels harassed can call their local law enforcement agency.
