Republic couple accused of abandoning animals arrested in Oakland County

MARQUETTE, MI— Two Republic residents wanted for animal abandonment and cruelty have been arrested downstate.

On December 8th, the Marquette County Sheriff’s Office issued a press release asking people to be on the lookout for Kenneth Barterian, 65, and Susan Barterian, 61. They were accused of abandoning several animals, which ended up at UPAWS. Felony warrants were issued for their arrest.

Marquette County Sheriff Greg Zyburt said Tuesday he received a tip through the department’s app regarding the Barterians’ location. The couple was arrested in Oakland County and brought back to the Upper Peninsula.

Both are charged with abandonment/cruelty, 4-10 animals. They posted $500 bonds and are scheduled to be arraigned January 9th.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
