Threat against Gwinn school made on social media

Nicole Walton

GWINN, MI— A juvenile faces potential charges after they made a threat against the Gwinn High School/Middle School Tuesday morning.

The Forsyth Township Police Department was notified around 7:10 a.m. that someone had issued the threat on social media. The person who sent the message was contacted a short time later.

Gwinn Area Community Schools Superintendent Sara Croney sent a letter about the incident to parents Tuesday morning. She said an unenrolled 7th-grader had threatened to “shoot up the school.” Parents saw the post and contacted police, who got in touch with the school.

Buses were already on their way to school when police were notified, so students were directed into the building instead of returning them to possibly empty homes.

Police say officials took all necessary precautions as information was being vetted to ensure the safety of the students, staff, and school. Although the investigation is still ongoing, there is no imminent threat to the school. Officials say all actions were taken as emergency protocol.

Forsyth Township Police were assisted by the Marquette City Police K-9 unit, Marquette County Sheriff Department, Marquette County Central Dispatch, and the Michigan Tech Police Department.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
