Arrest made in MSHS embezzlement case

MARQUETTE, MI— A Marquette woman was arrested by city police Friday in connection with an embezzlement case at Marquette Senior High School.

The Marquette County Prosecutor’s Office authorized a warrant for embezzlement – $100,000 or more against Stacey Leigh Kangas, 44. Officials with Marquette Area Public Schools notified the Marquette Police Department of an incident at the high school on December 12th. School authorities took action to ensure no further damage could occur.

MAPS says Kangas was previously employed in the MSHS Athletics Department. Officials say the administrative team has begun the process of establishing more effective internal controls for those who handle cash.

In a press release issued Monday, MAPS administrators said, “This behavior is entirely unacceptable and will not be tolerated at Marquette Area Public Schools. As stated previously, we appreciate the trust our community places in us and would like to publicly express our gratitude to the Marquette Police Department and Marquette County Prosecutor’s Office for their thorough investigation.”

Kangas posted a $2,500 bond. An arraignment date is set for February 26th in Marquette District Court.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
