Phone scammers pretending to be from Marquette County Sheriff's Office

MARQUETTE, MI— The Marquette County Sheriff’s Office has received numerous phone calls regarding scam complaints.

Scammers are calling residents, claiming they have a warrant out for their arrest, they failed to show for jury duty or a court appointment, or they’re directed to a website for more information. The caller’s telephone number appears valid, and often, the names of current or retired officers are used.

The Sheriff’s Office says it will not request personal information from anyone over the phone or direct someone to a website. Always use extreme caution when paying someone on the phone, especially if you receive a call as mentioned. And if you ever doubt the legitimacy of the person you’re talking to, always look up the phone number independently and call it to verify the person and request.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
